Usually, Jenny Lewis performs on bigger stages such as Stubbs and festivals, so it was quite a treat to see her dazzling in her return to a cozy and packed Gruene Hall. Drawing from her extensive discography from a myriad of projects since 1998, she showcased her dynamic range from country gospel to indie rock. Her voice was a beautiful warmth with an uncanny ability to draw one into a story about heartbreak, revenge, life, and everything in between. As expected of someone who has thoroughly mastered song writing, Jenny played the piano, guitar, and chimes as well. Giving the audience a show that was endlessly entertaining, for her song “Just One of the Guys”, huge balloons were thrown into the crowd as the crowd swayed and sang along. New music is coming she promised as she played a new song towards the end of the set. In a throwback to the Rilo Kiley days, she closed out with a touching Bad News slowed down version of “Portions for Foxes” that elicited applause and cheers. Jenny never disappoints and this show was definitely not an exception.
