MUNA is a band that caught my ear’s attention during SXSW 2016 and are only gaining more fans as time goes on. They have been playing sold out shows opening for Harry Styles around the world and stopped for four shows in Austin, (three times in a sea of people: twice at ACL festival and once at ACL Moody theatre) –so it was treat to be able to catch them in a cozy venue like the Parish with a receptive crowd that was enamored. They had the crowd laughing with their banter between every couple of songs, talking about the two cover songs and tour life. Their cover of U2’s With or Without you was beautiful, as was the Stevie Nick’s cover of Edge of 17 that had the crowd dancing and singing along. In the wide genre of synth pop, they stand out with their lyrical content, Katie’s vocals that grabs your ear drums, and synths that blend in perfectly with the other instruments without overshadowing them. Whether the song is sad or happy, the drum beat will have your feet moving through it. Keep an eye out for Muna as they garner a wider audience throughout their music career.
