The historic O4 Center in Austin was transformed into a Western saloon on Sunday, September 15th, as the legendary country music quartet, Riders in the Sky, took the stage. Known for their humorous storytelling and their love of Western music, the quartet—Ranger Doug (guitar and vocals), Too Slim (bass, humor, and vocals), Woody Paul (fiddle and vocals), and Joey “The Cow Polka King” (accordion and vocals)—delivered an amazing performance packed with classics and highlights from their latest album, Throw a Saddle on a Star (2023). The new instrumental “Getaway Gallop,” an energetic tune that perfectly displayed the Riders’ aptitude. Woody Paul’s nimble fiddling was a standout, while Joey’s accordion added that unmistakable Western polka flair. Too Slim, as always, served up a hefty dose of humor, entertaining the crowd between songs with his quick wit, all while keeping the rhythm steady on the upright bass. Ranger Doug, “The Idol of American Youth,” charmed the audience with his baritone voice and cowboy crooning on the guitar. They took a beat for “question time,” where the audience had the chance to ask the Riders some interesting questions. They answered every one with their brand of wit and good-natured banter, creating a charming atmosphere. The evening drew to a close with a special acoustic rendition of “Tumbling Tumbleweeds,” which hushed the crowd and left everyone in awe of the Riders’ vocal harmonies. With over four decades of performing together, Riders in the Sky remains a shining example of how to blend entertainment, humor, and true musical talent into a night to remember.
