Sons of an Illustrious Father are a humble three piece outfit that filled the Stubbs venue with so many different kinds of sounds and music. Before the show began, Ezra Miller (drummer/singer) offered ear plugs to the audience and handed some out from a big bucket from the stage in a bid to protect their hearing from the danger of hearing loss. In an age where celebrity musicians are oft dismissed, SoaIF are packed with raw musicianship, talent, and a plethora of different sounds that are characterized by the amalgamation of the different personalities in the band. While most bands have a clear structure of musical duties, SoaIF seem to showcase each member’s talents dependent on what each song requires in spirit, resulting in a dynamic soul of the band. All three members sing –sometimes as back up, sometimes all together a cappella in the center of the stage facing each other as they sang/covered “Ella’s Song”, an ode to remind us of the injustices of the world and that “we who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes.” While Liah was mainly on guitar and vox with Josh on keys and bass, Josh occasionally would switch and play guitar and take the front stage as well. It’s refreshing to see a band passionate not just about their music and fans, but about the well being of our society as well.
