On a warm Wednesday evening at Stubb’s Austin, hip-hop enthusiasts packed the venue for The We Legalized It Tour featuring Cypress Hill, The Pharcyde, and Souls of Mischief. All of these artists are celebrating 30th anniversaries for albums of theirs, so this tour was already dripping in nostalgia. Kicking off the night, Souls of Mischief, the renowned group from East Oakland, California, captivated the audience with their intricate lyrics and smooth flows.

DJ Lazy Boy set the mood, cutting and scratching to get the crowd hyped. Anticipation built until finally, Tajai, A-Plus, Phesto, and Opio hit the stage. The group’s chemistry was evident as they seamlessly transitioned between tracks, each member bringing their unique style and energy to the performance. Tajai’s commanding presence and articulate delivery complemented A-Plus’s laid-back, confident flow. Phesto’s rapid-fire verses and Opio’s introspective lyrics created a dynamic interplay that kept the audience engaged.

Throughout the set, Souls of Mischief delivered a mix of classic hits and newer material, showcasing their evolution as artists while staying true to their roots. Tracks like “Never No More” and “Limitations” highlighted their storytelling prowess and lyrical dexterity. The crowd’s energy never waned, with hands in the air, heads nodding to the beats, and voices echoing the lyrics.

The group also took moments between songs to connect with the crowd on a personal level. Expressing gratitude for the fans’ unwavering support over the years. This interaction added a layer of intimacy to the performance, making it feel like a gathering of old friends rather than just a concert.

As the show neared its end, Souls of Mischief saved some of their most beloved tracks for last. The encore was a crescendo of energy, with the audience fully immersed in the experience “93 To Infinity” closed the night.

This live performance was a masterclass in hip-hop showmanship. They delivered an unforgettable experience, blending nostalgia with fresh energy, and proving that their relevance in the hip-hop world remains strong—a testament to the enduring power of their music and their skill as performers.
