Celebrating 40 years of Modern Talking, Thomas Anders graced the Warehouse Live in Houston, Texas, one of only five stops on his US tour. I am a huge fan of Modern Talking, so there was no question that this trip was going to be made – even if it was a Thursday night and I had work the next morning – and I was not alone in that feeling. Thomas and his band played to a full crowd for nearly two hours, taking us on a musical history through his great career.
The set was a mix of Modern Talking and Thomas’ solo work, with cover surprises (Imagine blending into Give Me Peace, Life is a Rollercoaster) and even reprises of Brother Louie and Cheri Cheri Lady, 21 songs in total. The band played wonderfully and Thomas’ voice was strong and clear through the entire show, it was absolutely perfect. They gave their all, and it was received enthusiastically by the crowd, who were excited and dancing throughout. Between songs, Thomas spent time interacting with the audience, telling stories about signing his first contract 46 years ago, and the time he heard a song he really enjoyed on the radio, so he looked it up and was surprised to discover it was actually him, in an older song he had forgotten he had done.
Personal highlights were Just We Two (Mona Lisa) (one of my favourites), You’re My Heart, You’re My Soul (my first MT song and another favourite), and opener Jet Airliner (okay y’all, they’re all my favourites). The video collage showcasing highlights of Thomas’ life and career during The Journey of Life was sweet. Watching the crowd dance to the ‘…ultimate summer good mood fun’ song No Face No Name No Number was exciting, and just seeing how happy and engaged the audience was so amazing and fun…thats the perfect way to describe the entire show – Fun. And if you are fortunate enough to live in one of the lucky cities where the tour stops – or within a driving distance – I would completely recommend trying to go. I promise it is well worth that extra cup of coffee the next morning.
